on Monday, MAY 20, 2024

Description:

On June 18, 2007, nine firefighters perished in a warehouse fire in Charleston, SC. What was initially dispatched as a trash fire escalated into one of the most scrutinized events in nation fire service history. David has the unfortunate experience of being the engineer on the first due engine that day. As he operated on the fireground, he witnessed things that he will never forget.

This seminar will present:

  • First-hand accounts of that day.

  • Never before seen video footage with radio traffic.

  • Initial resistance to the changes following the tragedy.

  • The heavy toll that this catastrophic event took on David's life.

  • The incredible changes that he and the CFD have made.

  • Dr. Griffin's scientific research regarding the change process following this event.

  • Details from the coinciding Best Selling Book, In Honor of The Charleston 9: A Study of Change Following Tragedy.

The Southern California Association of Foresters and Fire Wardens (SCAFFW) Conference

DESCRIPTION:

  • Each year, the Southern California Association of Foresters and Fire Wardens brings together close to 200 people from different fire protection agencies for a two-day annual conference with programs relating to the training and safety of members involved in wildland fire control.

  • Attendees should come prepared to spend the night on Thursday in order to enjoy the full benefits of the Conference Agenda.

  • An outstanding program agenda with some dynamic speakers, an excellent vendor display, some great meals, some fun entertainment, and some great networking with peers, coworkers, friends, acquaintances, and other professionals from different departments.

  • Items that Conference Attendees should bring to Camp would include a pillow, sleeping bag or other bedding, shower towel, change of clothes, sensible shoes, any needed prescribed medications, shaving gear, and any toiletries that may be needed (soap, shampoo, Deodorant, etc.).

STAFFING:

No backfill, holdover, or overtime is authorized.

COST:

JAC funds sponsor the conference registration which includes lodging and meals.

JAC funds do not cover staffing or transportation for selected students.

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • Submit your interest by: Friday, April 5, 2024

  • Up to 50 OCFA personnel are approved to attend the conference.

  • The Operations and Training Section will review the list of interested personnel.

  • Those selected will be notified by e-mail.

Mission-Driven Culture (MDC) Familiarization Workforce Meeting

** PLEASE NOTE: THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO OCFA EMPLOYEES ONLY **

Background:

Developing our operational culture has been identified as a primary goal for the Authority’s advancement and to set the foundation for its future growth.  In 2018 Chief Fennessy introduced the values and principles of a Mission-Driven Culture (MDC) to provide a framework for this ongoing evolution.  This effort is growing. New doctrine is being developed, and leader development opportunities are now being offered to support, reinforce, and model the values and behaviors that are desired in OCFA firefighters and leaders.  Informed from the findings from the cultural survey completed in late 2018, OCFA leadership is now involved in formulating how to best implement the principles of MDC in daily operations. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), a non-profit organization supporting the advancement of all fire services internationally, and Mission-Centered Solutions (MCS) are assisting the OCFA to achieve its goals in the areas of leader and operational development. 

The Workforce Meeting:

Two briefing opportunities will be available for members to understand the basis of the MDC initiative and the driving forces behind it, both for OCFA and the fire service in general.  The session will also discuss some of the initial steps that the OCFA has planned and provide an opportunity for Q&A with Chief Fennessy and the leadership team about the initiative and the survey conducted earlier this year.

All levels of personnel from professional staff and field personnel.
