Description:

This is a classroom course designed to produce student proficiency in the performance of duties associated with the Single Resource Boss position from initial dispatch through demobilization to the home unit. Topics include: operational leadership, preparation and mobilization, assignment preparation, risk management, entrapment avoidance, safety and tactics, off-line duties, demobilization, and post-incident responsibilities. Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to the tools and techniques used to perform the duties of a Status/Check-in Recorder (SCKN). The course provides an overview of what a student can expect if dispatched to an incident.

Each student will need access to a computer that has the most current incident automation software. At the time of this publication, I-Suite is the industry standard.

Objectives

The desired outcome of this course is to prepare students to:

• Set up and manage a check-in station.

• Process information using incident automation software and other paper based methods.

• Package the information into useful products.

Description:

This course is designed to introduce fire behavior calculations by manual methods, using nomograms and the Fire Behavior Handbook Appendix B. Students gain an understanding of the determinants of fire behavior though studying inputs (weather, slope, fuels, and fuel moisture). Students also learn how to interpret fire behavior outputs, documentation processes, and fire behavior briefing components.

Description:

This is a classroom-based skills course designed to prepare the prospective fire line supervisor to undertake safe and effective fire management operations.  It is the second course in a series that collectively serves to develop fire behavior prediction knowledge and skills.  Fire environment differences are discussed as necessary; instructor should stress local conditions.  There will be mandatory pre-coursework and a qualifying exam associated with this class.

Description:

This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the entry level professional instructor to perform his or her duties safely, effectively, and competently. The curriculum is based on the 2012 edition of NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications. At the end of this course, candidates for Instructor 1 certification will be able to teach and deliver instruction from a prepared lesson plan utilizing instructional aids and evaluation instruments. The Instructor 1 will also be able to adapt a lesson plan and complete the reporting requirements to the local jurisdiction.

Description:

This course provides information on securing the fire scene and determining the origin and cause of the fire. Topics include responsibilities of a fire investigator, securing the fire ground, conducting an exterior and interior survey, analyzing fire patterns, interpreting individual fire patterns, discriminating the effects of explosions, examining and removing fire debris, reconstructing the area of origin, inspecting the performance of building systems.

The RIO course is designed to provide instructors who will deliver SFT training programs with an overview of State Fire Training, CFSTES, and FSTEP, instructor registration requirements, instructor responsibilities, and accountability, how to schedule and return courses, and the SFT Procedures Manual.

The CEET course provides in-depth instruction on the registration requirements for Registered Lead Evaluators and Skills Evaluators, processes and procedures to request and successfully deliver both written and skills certification examinations, and information on transitioning from instructor to evaluator.

Description:

This course is beneficial for most ICS positions. Map and compass is a prerequisite for Fire Line EMT/Paramedic and Field Observers for Orange County Fire Authority employees. Course content includes use of maps and symbols, using a compass to find your field location on a map, using a GPS receiver to locate your position on a map, establishing waypoints, track logs and mapping the perimeter of a fire. Description:

This course introduces the roles and responsibilities of a Firing Boss (FIRB) and outlines duties of other personnel who may engage firing operations. The course discusses and illustrates common firing devices and techniques. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Identify the roles and responsibilities of the FIRB for planning, execution, safety, coordination, and evaluation of an ignition operation on a wildland or prescribed fire.

• Describe the characteristics, applications, safety and availability of the various firing devices a FIRB has at their disposal.

• Given a wildland or prescribed scenario, prepare a firing plan and briefing that contains desired fire behavior, firing techniques, required resources, coordination, safety and risk management factors, and communication, to meet specific objectives.

** Please Note: There are two offerings, May 1-2 and May 3-4. These dates are classroom days; there will be an optional field day for attendees of either class, weather and fuel dependent, on May 5 **

Description:

This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the intermediate level professional instructor to perform his or her duties safely, effectively, and competently. The curriculum is based on the 2012 edition of NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications. At the end of this course, candidates for Instructor 2 certification will be able to develop lesson plans and evaluation instruments, teach and deliver instruction, and evaluate and coach other instructors. The Instructor 2 will also be able to analyze resources and formulate a program budget.

** Class will be on a 4/10 schedule, with a late start on day one (0900 hours) to allow for personnel to arrive on time from their stations. Class dates are: April 24, 25, 27 and 28.

Description:

This course provides information on evaluating and reporting incident conditions, analyzing incident needs, developing and implementing a plan of action to deploy incident resources completing all operations to suppress a wildland fire, establishing an incident command post, creating an incident action plan, and completing incident records and reports.

Description:

This course provides information on conducting incident size-up, developing and implementing an initial plan of action involving single and multiunit operations for various types of emergency incidents to mitigate the situation following agency safety procedures, conducting pre-incident planning, and develop and conduct a post-incident analysis.

Hazardous Material Incident Commander

Description:

This course is designed to meet the training needs of the incident commander type 4 (ICT4). It is presented in a discussion/exercise format. The six instructional units include Foundation Skills; Intelligence Gathering and Documentation; Size Up the Incident; Develop a Plan of Action; Post-fire Activities; Evaluating Incident Objectives and Manage the Incident. Evaluation of the student is by unit tests and performance based evaluations.

Objectives:

• Demonstrate effective foundation skills (leadership, risk management, and communications) at the ICT4 level.

• Gather and document essential information about the incident.

• Size up the incident, develop plan of action.

• Manage the incident through effective leadership.

• Demonstrate the ability to evaluate plan of action and make adjustments to the plan when necessary.

• Conduct post fire activities.

Description:

This course provides the tools a person needs to assume control of an emergency response to a hazardous materials incident. Instructional methods will include class activities, case studies and table-top exercises with an emphasis on hands-on decision making. Course topics include: laws and regulations, hazard assessment, ICS team typing, protective actions, haz mat site safety, operational risk management, and incident termination.
